The CARS sample of nearby AGN host galaxies

The mother sample from the Hamburg/ESO survey:

The mother sample for CARS was selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey to contain all AGN with 0.01<z<0.06. The upper redshift cut was imposed so that the stellar CO absorption bands are still observable in the K-band for the ground. The lead to a total sample of 99 AGN that do not reach in luminosity than their high-redshift counterparts, but represent a purely flux-limited sample most luminous unobscured AGN for the given redshift range. All AGN are unobscured as the Hamburg/ESO survey specifically detected AGN by their broad lines and the blue excess of the power-law continuum.

The CARS sample:

From the mother sample 41 have been observed with the IRAM 30m telescope in the sub-mm to obtain the CO(1-0) line fluxes as a proxy for the total molecular gas as reported by Bertram et al. (2007). In addition, the Effelsberg radio telescope has targeted 21cm line for all those galaxies for which the CO(1-0) could be detected. Only 12 were detected at 21cm from which the total atomic gas mass is inferred.

From those 41 objects we removed only NGC 4153 which is too close so that it appears larger than the 1'x1' FoV that the MUSE integral-field unit provides.  The final sample of CARS galaxies is listed below with some principle parameters currently available.
